A5 (2020) Review: Outstanding Battery Life, Wonderful Price

If Oppo is a new brand name to you then maybe you are unsure if OPPO makes decent smartphones. Do not fear, however, as Oppo is well regarded in China & has spent a number of years building up to this release in Europe and elsewhere, and with great smartphones such as Reno 10X already making an impact.

OPPO A5 (2020) does not pretend to be a top level handset, yet it sure does provide a nice set of features with an excellent price. So if you've been eyeing up a Motorola G8 Plus or a Moto One series phone, then the subtle savings provided by Oppo's A5 2020, along with its large battery, make a case to buy.

Oppo A5 2020 Design & Display

Dimensions: 163.6 x 75.4 x 9.1mm
Device Weight: approx 195 g
Finishes: Dazzling White, Mirror Black
Screen: 6.5-inch LCD, 1600 x 720 resolution
3.5mm headphone jack
Back finger print scan sensor

There isn't any immediate indicators that the The OPPO A5 (2020) is a entry level phone. The semi-reflective rear, with an Oppo logo transfer & the text "designed for A-series", comes with a bright gloss, while the camera and back fingerprint scanner have been aligned in a tidy form. The problem is, that the Mirror Black color of this phone which is more of a grey, really is easy to get dirty, and I find that the scanner a bit high in its placement and too close to the camera.

The same can also be said to the front 6.5-inch screen is adequate, but not unwieldy, is held together with a neat trim bezel to the top & side edges & only a tiny extra towards the chin section. there is a dew drop notch out of the screen, and this is where the front-facing camera is positioned, and it's not distracting & hasn't been troublesome for any apps that we have been testing. Just on top this is a tiny speaker grille, which is good when making calls, a thing we've discovered not to be the case with, say, other phones that have a similar layout.

However, the display isn't the best resolution going, giving an HD+ resolution. That's like the 720p televisions of old, & while it doesn't appear bad in its presentation of details, a Full HD+ screen, like you are provided with the Motorola G8 Plus. Indeed, this handset is marginally less expensive than that Motorola, however those extra resolution would help make a large difference.

There is another problem with the handset's screen: take off the plastic screen guard (just as we do with all review phones) and that top layer isn't the greatest at defeating fingerprint marks, this is a thing we've hardly looked at since Huawei's P10. This does not wreck your experience, however you may get more rainbow marks than you'd want to.

Elsewhere in the design the OPPO A5 2020 comes with a 3.5 mm headphone jack, so there's no reason why you can't plug headphones into it, while the bottom-positioned speaker is great when delivering audio for tones and film clips.

A5 2020 Battery & Performance

Snapdragon 665 Chipset
3GB Of RAM
64GB memory
Dedicated microSD card expansion
5000mAh battery
USB Type-C charging
ColorOS 6.0 Android based operating system

Perhaps the most impressive thing about The OPPO A5 2020 is the phone's battery life. Despite the body not being too thick, it's a large 5000mAh unit in this smartphone. Considering Sasmung's S10 has 3,400mAh in comparison, you can understand potential of how much more battery power this device can offer.

During the time that we've been testing The OPPO A5 2020 , it's been delivering about 28 hours of use per charge. If you are not constantly on your phone That is good for two days of use. If you're on your phone a lot, playing games and other types apps, well then you will still get a full day's use no dramas.

Battery charging is not lightning speed fast, but it is done via USB Type C, not the Micro-USB like quite a few previous models of devices.

Battery life is assisted by some efficiencies of the phone: the display, as we have found, isn't the highest resolution display around; & its processor, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 665, isn't the best processor produced.

Considering the latter point, however, it is not a problem because we have been able to play titles like Clash Of Clans with no issues, and while the go-to South Park: Phone Destroyer has responded lag-free & & clear animations. Indeed, this one is the same you will find in Motorola's G8 Plus.

and the processor and amount of RAM (at 3GB), can sometimes show their middling levels. Be that a couple of seconds extra to wait for an app to load up, or a buffering while your game is sorting its business out, it's only these small points that make the user realise you're not using a flagship handset.

The software on board is Oppo's long-established ColorOS, and based on the Google Android, over which ColorOS lays, and Oppo has made various additions, tweaks and layout adjustments. Because of this we don't see the operating system as clearly as an Android handset. Features such as constant notifications from the device's battery management, every app being shown across a few pages & notifications we found annoying.

With that being said, there are some good add ons like fingerprint/face locking app for additional security, high levels of customisation within notifications formats, a quick access to your favourite apps panel, & app duplication to allow you to use the Dual SIM , but the system will not draw backups for the second app.

Using 2 SIM cards also does not prohibit the possibility of expanding on the on board storage, as there is a dedicated microSD card slot. Very handy if you want heaps of photos, videos & apps on your device - an extra 64GB is unlikely to cost more than a tenner.

A5 2020 Cameras

'Quad' rear cameras:
Main: 12MP, f/1.8 aperture
Ultra-wide: 8 megapixel, f/2.25 aperture
Two 2 MP depth sensors, f/2.4
Front Facing Cmaera: 8 Megapixel, f/2.0

In terms of the cameras, The Oppo A5 2020 the four camera system, however because 2 of rear cameras being depth sensors, & the ultra-wide camera doesn't function think of the setup as though they are a single lens design.

The camera app is a not fast, however it is not horrible considering this is an base model phone. We have had no problems shooting even in low-light conditions, and the close-up focus functions very well. this is a bit of a exception in a few handsets & camera systems.

There isn't a lot of bells & whistles though. You will get HDR (high dynamic range) to remove any shadow and highlight the details, and you will not have help for low light photos and, like we say, there's no wide option.

There is a 2x and a 5x digital zoom, which crops into pics, yet does still gives a 12MP image. As for the ultra-wide camera, the site states for panoramic pictures, so we presume this setup is just for pan-to-shoot panoramics, even though the angle of view in this mode is not wide. It was confusing.

And the photos we've taken with the camera will have good detail in good light, but low-light causes inevitable softness. Having said that, as for looking at on a phone display or for sharing on social media, that's pretty good.

On the front, there's an 8MP camera which has the usual glut of Oppo's smoothing and face-thinning effects which, we are happy to never use. Each to their own, though, we know there are fans of the 'beautification' options.

Our Conclusions

If you're wanting an cheap smartphone there are many good choices, the OPPO A5 2020 among these phones. The phone's battery is great, having near 2 day {life|between charges, and the screen is {large|huge|good sized, and the CPU ample for apps and games.

Now that that has been said, the display could be higher-resolution & more resistant to smears, and the quad camera is a total oversell, (treat it as a single 12MP main), & some will think the software finicky.

And for the price{, however,|you pay for the phone it all performs well, and the design is comfortable in the hand, and there is all the makings of a good Motorola G8 Plus nemesis right here. And, the A5 2020 isn't as pricey either.

Oppo A5 2020 is either more nor less than the twin sister to the OPPO A9 (2020) because it shares with it the most features: 6.5 inch screen, Qualcomm Snapdragon 665 chip, 5,000 mAh battery, quad lens camera.
